To The Beach!

I know you are all relieved to see that I did indeed survive the cran-apple-shards-of-glass pie I felt compelled to sample after it didn’t make the Thanksgiving table.  I didn’t actually eat much of it.  The topping was so crunchy that I imagined glass in each bite, even though it was really only in every third bite or so.  It just wasn’t worth the angst, especially when there was perfectly good pumpkin to be had.  Am I the only one who loves pumpkin pie but only thinks to make it at Thanksgiving?  Let’s change that in 2014, shall we?

Saturday I accompanied Mark to Jacksonville, Florida for a short get-away.  He had a legal education gig to attend and it happened to be just a few miles from his brother and sister-in-law in Ponte Vedra, so I couldn’t resist tagging along.  We felt pretty smart to be getting on a plane to one of the few destinations in the country that was not experiencing winter weather last weekend.

not wintery, but foggy

not wintry, but foggy

On Sunday I drove down the beach a short way to Neptune Beach.  My sister-in-law had told me about an independent book store there, so of course I had to check it out.

I bought a copy of Tenth of December by George Saunders, which was on my (long) list of 2013 books to be read.  Anyone out there read it yet?

Neptune Beach had a retro feel, particularly on a grey and foggy day.

Fortunately, Monday was brighter.

Back in Houston tonight and it’s still cold and rainy, which feels strangely good after 85 degrees in Jacksonville on my way to the airport.  Call me crazy, but I do love me some winter.

Stay warm and dry, mes amis!  And don’t bake your pies in Pyrex that didn’t once belong to your mother.
